Over the years exterior lights on automobiles have changed. At one time they were really just electrified lanterns. Early vehicles had headlights much like those of today in concept, however. Headlights from classics like Packages, Pierce-Arrows, and Rolls-Royces look huge, but in reality there is a small bulb inside that takes advantace of reflection and magnification.
Light bulbs require changing. Vehicles that contain more bulbs have more bulbs to replace. For example, the Buick Century had running lights, which are always lit and have turning lights. These light up the side of the road in which the car will be turning. These are in addition to turn-signals.
Plastic headlight covers that have become dull and opaque, should be replaced for better safety.
With different lighting packages and after market add-ons just checking the bulds could become a time consuming chore, but what used to be individual lights has become assemblies and systems, requiring lighting harnesses and various connections. Some of these assemblies and systems are now built into grill work and trunks to avoid damage from minor bumper collisions. This of course complicates what used to be simple replacement, but overall provides additional safety and aero-dynamic surfaces that provide less wind resistance giving our vehicles better milage. Everything works together.
